Pregnancy & Chiropractic
The Secret to a Healthy
Pregnancy by Dr. Charmin GansFrom back pain relief to shorter labors, the benefits of chiropractic care seem almost limitless. More and more women are adding this drug-free natural healthcare to their pregnancy regimen and loving the results. During pregnancy, the growing baby alters the biomechanics of the woman’s spine often shifting the vertebrae and putting pressure on the spinal nerves. The most common and easiest place to see these postural changes is where the majority of the baby’s weight is located, in the lower spine and pelvis. Chiropractic care is safe and effective throughout a woman’s entire pregnancy. Regular adjustments can even make the pregnancy less stressful and delivery easier. Chiropractors who specialize in the specific needs of a pregnant woman’s body have adjusting tables with abdominal openings for her growing baby. Since, no x-rays are taken during pregnancy; examinations often consist of digital computerized scans to detect problems in the spinal column and nervous system.
In fact, studies have proven chiropractic care helps create a more comfortable pregnancy, easier labor and delivery, as well as, faster post-partum recovery! In one study, 91% of patients receiving spinal adjustments reported relief of back pain during pregnancy. And because the sacroiliac joints of the pelvis function better, there is significant less likelihood of back labor when receiving adjustments throughout pregnancy. Chiropractic care can also smooth the progress of delivery for both the mother and child by aligning the pelvis and allowing it to expand properly. Research has shown that women receiving Chiropractic care through their first pregnancy had 24% shorter labor times than those not receiving Chiropractic, and 39% shorter labor times in women who have had children before. It has also been shown to lessen medication requirements by at least 50%. Another study stated that post-partum depression is a rarity in patients receiving chiropractic care. Chiropractic has been able to correct or reduce in-utero constraint (breech presentations) 82% of the time with a specific and gentle adjusting procedure, developed by the late Dr. Larry Webster, termed the Webster Technique. The chances a baby turning from breech to the normal vertex position are increased significantly with the use of this technique making natural childbirth an option for many women. The benefits and necessity of chiropractic care in the pregnant woman are amazing and should be added to every prenatal regime.
Pregnancy is a great time to begin or continue your chiropractic care.
